    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Andaman vs Gulf seasons

Thailand has two coasts on opposite monsoon clocks. The Andaman side. Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi. Is at its best November to April; the Gulf side. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan. Runs later and takes its heaviest rain October to December. If the dates are fixed, pick the coast to match, not the other way round.

    2

    Temple dress, enforced

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew turn away anyone in shorts, short skirts, or bare shoulders, and the guards are strict about it. There's a hire counter, but the queue eats an hour. Carry a light scarf and long trousers in the day bag. Feet point away from any Buddha image when you sit.

    3

    The island-tour speedboats

Most Phi Phi and four-island trips run on shared speedboats packed to the rail. Fast, wet, and loud. If anyone in the party gets seasick or wants the bay before the fleet arrives, pay up for the private longtail or the early departure. Maya Bay closes to boats some mornings to let the reef recover; check the day before.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The broad window for most of Thailand is November to March. Dry, warm, and the coolest the country gets. April and May are the hot season, when Songkran's water fights break the heat in mid-April. The southwest monsoon brings the rains June to October, heaviest on the Andaman coast; the Gulf islands run a month or two behind and stay drier into the early monsoon. Bangkok and the temples are comfortable in the cool season and punishing in April.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

A serene view of sailboats docked in Pattaya's marina with clear blue skies

Day 2. A full day on Coral Island

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Coral Island, Koh Larn. Is a short speedboat hop off Pattaya, and a full day buys time to find the quieter beaches on the far side. Parasailing, banana boats, a long seafood lunch under a beach umbrella. The water gets clearer the further you walk from the pier.

    Pattaya01
    Wat Pho — Bangkok, Thailand

Day 3. Wat Pho and the reclining Buddha

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The drive into Bangkok ends at the temples. Wat Pho's reclining Buddha is forty-six metres of gold leaf, the soles of its feet inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the door. The half-day tour barely scratches the old royal island.

    Bangkok02
Serene view of a small island surrounded by the sea and cloudy sky in Hua Hin, Thailand

Day 4. Safari World, the marine show

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Safari World is a drive-through animal park plus a marine park of dolphin and sea-lion shows. Entirely for the children, and they don't stop talking about it. Allow the full morning; the show schedule runs to a tight clock and you'll want to catch the orangutan boxing.

    Bangkok03
Charming riverside view in Bangkok showcasing iconic architecture under a vibrant sky

Day 4. Last evening, the night market

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The last evening goes to a Bangkok night market. Silk, street pad thai cooked in a flaming wok, mango sticky rice from a cart. The vendors quote high and expect you to halve it; the haggling is part of the transaction, not a fight.
