Sri Lanka is small. You can drive from the cultural triangle to the south coast in five hours, and from one ocean to the other in three. What makes it feel large is that no two of those five hours look the same. The same morning gives you a rock fortress, a tea estate, and a Buddhist procession; the same evening gives you a curry, a leopard, and a stilt fisherman who has been there since his grandfather.

Tibro has been routing Sri Lanka since 2012. Through the end of the civil war and the recovery that followed it, and through the 2019 Easter bombings, and through the 2022 economic crisis. The country has earned its travellers.
Our partner in Colombo is Aruni, a chef-turned-designer who left a London kitchen in 2008. She runs a five-person studio whose drivers are all certified national-level guides and all members of the same training cohort.
We work with a small set of boutique villas across the south coast and a smaller set of estate bungalows in the hill country. We do not work with the big-name international chains. Sri Lanka's best rooms are owner-operated.
Ten routes is the current shape. Adding one requires Aruni to have eaten at the suggested restaurant herself.

Cultural triangle & south coast, twelve nights, February 2025
Aruni had us at Sigiriya at five-fifteen in the morning, before the bus tours, and the lion rock was empty for ninety minutes. The same day, we had a private lunch at a paddy-field restaurant her father used to take her to. The trip felt personal in the way none of our other Asia trips have.

Hills, train, and Galle, nine nights, January 2025
We took the blue train from Kandy to Ella in second class, on Aruni's specific recommendation against the air-conditioned observation car. The right call. Children played at every station, the door was open the whole way, and the engineer waved us to the front cab for the Nine Arches Bridge. Cannot be booked online; cannot be replicated.

South coast & Yala, eight nights, December 2024
On the second drive in Yala, our guide spotted a leopard on a tree branch from three kilometres away. He had been a tracker since he was eleven. Aruni had quietly mentioned to us at dinner that the guide had been with our camp for nineteen years and that we should ask him about the 2004 tsunami. We did. We didn't talk for a long time afterwards.
