A door painted for the same reason it was built.
Fes el-Bali, Tuesday morning

Morocco is a doorway and what lies beyond it. The country does not announce its best rooms from the street; the riad you stay in is invisible until you knock on the studded cedar door and a hand pulls you through it into a courtyard with a fountain. That is how the country teaches you to read it. Forty steps in, twelve degrees cooler, no plan you can carry out of the medina that survives the next corner.

Tibro has been routing Morocco since 2008, when our first Maghreb traveller flew out of Mumbai with seven nights and a question about how to do Marrakech without overheating.
We work with a Marrakech-based partner studio run by Yasmine, a third-generation Marrakshi whose family has owned a riad in the medina for ninety years. Our days in the Imperial cities are her days, edited for the dates you give us.
Riads in Morocco are owner-operated, family-run, and small. We do not work with international hotel chains for the Marrakech and Fes stays. They are technically luxurious and structurally wrong. The riads we use are between five and twelve rooms each.
Six routes is the current ceiling. Adding a seventh requires either a new region (we are looking at the Souss-Massa) or a route through an existing region that the Marrakech designer has slept in herself.
Warmly,
The Tibro studio , Mumbai, Marrakech (partner)
Yasmine at the Marrakech end met us at our riad at midnight on a Thursday because that was when we landed, and she had brought soup. The next morning's tagine class was held in the kitchen of a woman who has cooked the same six dishes for forty years. The desert was the desert, but the country before the desert is the thing we will go back for.
Fes was the trip. I had been told Marrakech was the country; it isn't. Fes is the country, and Tibro put us into a riad in the medina with a hostess who took us through the tannery on day two with a face cloth and a story about her grandfather. We added Essaouira at the end because Tibro suggested it for the breeze, and it was the right call.
We are not trekkers. Tibro put us into the Atlas anyway, but routed it so we walked for four hours a day and arrived each evening at a village house with hot showers and a goat curry. Imlil was the hardest day, and the best one. We came back to a riad in Marrakech and slept for fourteen hours.
A line is enough. The Sahara, a riad, an Atlas village, a teenager's first souk. Yasmine in Marrakech will write back within the working day.
