    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    №1

Inner Line Permits & Mandatory Identification

Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, and North Sikkim require military and civil permits. Indian citizens must carry original Voter ID or Passport (Aadhaar & PAN Cards are strictly NOT accepted at checkposts) plus 4 passport photos. Minors below 18 must bring original English birth certificate & school ID.

    №2

High-Altitude Acclimatization at Gurudongmar (17,800 ft)

Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley sit above 17,000 ft in sub-zero thin air. Acclimatize well at Lachen, stay hydrated, avoid overexertion. Guests with heart or severe respiratory conditions should consult a physician before ascending.

    №3

    Tiger Hill Sunrise Coupon Allocation

Darjeeling local authorities limit early morning vehicles to Tiger Hill to 600 vehicles daily. Dawn coupons are allocated subject to administrative quota availability. If dawn coupons are exhausted, the Tiger Hill visit is conducted smoothly post-breakfast.

    №4

Mountain Road Realities & Alternate Route Contingency

North Sikkim passes are prone to seasonal weather shifts and occasional road repairs. If access to Tsomgo or Gurudongmar is temporarily restricted, our ground team immediately arranges enriching alternative sightseeing such as Bakthang Falls and Gangtok Ropeway.

    Questions

    Before you ask.

№1Which documents are required for Sikkim permits?

For Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Lachen, Lachung, and Gurudongmar Lake, Indian nationals need an original Passport or Voter ID Card (Aadhaar and PAN cards are NOT accepted by checkposts) along with 4 recent passport-size photos. Children under 18 must carry their original birth certificate in English and student photo ID.

№2Can foreign nationals and OCI cardholders visit Gurudongmar Lake?

North Sikkim (Gurudongmar Lake and Lachen) is restricted to Indian nationals only. Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders can travel up to Lachung and Yumthang Valley with a Protected Area Permit (PAP) arranged in advance, but are not permitted at Gurudongmar Lake.

№3What type of vehicles are used for the journey?

For 2–3 guests, comfortable Wagon R / Swift or similar is provided; for 4–6 guests, spacious Mahindra Xylo / Scorpio is allocated. For North Sikkim, sturdy high-clearance 4WD/MUV vehicles are mandatory due to high-altitude terrain. Vehicle upgrade to Toyota Innova is available on request.

№4What is the best season to do the 10-night Sikkim & Darjeeling tour?

March to June offers clear Himalayan mountain vistas and the spectacular rhododendron bloom in Yumthang Valley. October to December offers crisp, crystal-clear skies with snow-covered Kanchenjunga panoramas.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

India is too large for a single calendar, but three broad windows hold. October to March is the cool, dry season — the headline stretch for most of the subcontinent, from the Rajasthan forts to the Kerala backwaters. April to June is hot, and in the northern plains genuinely dangerous. July to September is the southwest monsoon.

The exceptions matter as much as the rule. The Himalayan high country — Ladakh, Spiti, upper Himachal — inverts it completely and is only open May to September. Kashmir peaks in summer, Sikkim in spring and autumn, and Tamil Nadu takes its rain from the northeast monsoon in October and November. Each itinerary carries its own regional calendar.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Day 2. Rumtek monastery, the prayer hall

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Rumtek is the seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage outside Tibet. Built in the 1960s by the 16th Karmapa. The main prayer hall has a copper-and-gold stupa in the inner sanctum. The monks chant at six and again at five; the older lamas will explain the lineage if you sit down with them after.

Day 4. Yumthang valley, the flowers at noon

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Yumthang is the valley of flowers in north Sikkim. Primulas, rhododendrons, blue poppies. The road runs to about 12,000 feet and the air is thin enough to slow you down. We arrived in May and the rhododendrons were in full red. The hot springs at the river mouth are still in use.

    Day 6. Pelling, Pemayangtse monastery

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Pelling sits at 7,000 feet and the Kanchenjunga view from the upper market is the photograph everyone wants. The Pemayangtse monastery below is older than the town itself. 17th century. And the lamas open the upper floor for visitors at eight. The cantilever zang-dok-palri model on the top floor is one of the wonders.

Day 9. Tiger Hill dawn, Kanchenjunga lit

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

Tiger Hill is a four o'clock wake-up. The jeep collects you, the road is dark, and the platform fills with about three hundred others. The first light hits Kanchenjunga before anything else; the mountain turns pink and then gold for about three minutes. After that everyone walks back to the jeep for chai.
